Red Bull lost the least time in qualifying pace out of all Formula 1 teams

A lot has changed in Formula 1 cars since 2020, despite the fact that the biggest rule changes won't take effect until 2022. In 2021, there was a rule change that has a big impact on the speed of the cars; they are allowed to have less downforce than before.

This change is reflected in the lap times. Where the times normally get continuously faster, now everyone goes backwards. For comparison, the qualifying times for Spain in 2021 are held next to the times of the winter test at the same circuit in 2020.

Red Bull lost less time than everyone else

One striking detail is that Red Bull Racing only lost half a second compared to their 2020 test times. This is especially remarkable considering the team started the 2020 season with a bigger time loss than all other teams.

McLaren doing well too

That McLaren is on the way back up was already apparent for some time, and this comparison underlines that once again. The British team lost just eight-tenths compared to their times at the winter test in 2020, leaving only Red Bull ahead of them in terms of the least time loss.

Mercedes lost twice as much time as Red Bull

Another notable detail is that Mercedes lost a second in time compared to their 2020 test times. The team may have secured pole position in Spain, but they have lost twice as much time as Red Bull since the winter test in 2020.
