Red Bull Racing unveiled the start of the build of their new engine department last week. They did so by announcing that Ben Hodgkinson is moving from Mercedes to Red Bull. Christian Horner insisted in Portimao that this was a project of Red Bull's own and that no engine manufacturer was involved.

Horner said this in response to Toto Wolff, who according to Horner should mind his own business. Wolff sees the construction of a completely new factory in Milton Keynes as a sign that an engine manufacturer is involved. It would be Volkswagen, probably with Porsche as the chosen brand.

Horner would not disclose information

However, after Horner's firm denial, Wolff throws a wrench in it to Sky Germany. "We do understand this strategy. It's not a bad idea for Red Bull. They would like to produce their own engines, but two of Volkswagen's brands are interested in the sport. They are even part of the discussion around the new regulations."

So, according to the Mercedes team boss, you have to be very naive to believe that the German car giant is not at least holding talks with Red Bull. What's more, they can enter into this partnership any time after 2022 as Red Bull will no longer have any obligations to Honda.
