Coronavirus doesn't stop Mugello: 'Submit official proposal on 1 March'

As it stands, April will be a quiet month for Formula 1 teams and fans. The Chinese Grand Prix has been postponed due to the coronavirus and this leads a full month break in the Spring. The Italian circuit, Mugello, has different ideas about this.

It was announced on Monday that the circuit is proposing a replacement. Frederico Ignesti, the mayor of the local municipality, adds to that in an interview with Radio Sportiva. The circuit is ready to be officially nominated this week.

“We have proposed replacing the Chinese Grand Prix. The circuit meets all requirements and on March 1 we will officially apply. The owners of the circuit are already investing to appear on the Formula 1 calendar in the coming years," he said.

Does coronavirus throw a spanner in the works?

The question is whether the proposal is being considered at all. The coronavirus continues to pursue Formula 1 in this case. There is now also an outbreak in Italy. The proposal to organise a Grand Prix will, however, remain. According to Ignesti, the circuit has played an important role in international motorsport over the years, making it an attractive location to organise a Grand Prix.

“We never organized a Grand Prix, but we did tests. Webber has said that a trip to Mugello is worth ten times as much as to Abu Dhabi. The epic collaboration between Ferrari and Schumacher originated on this circuit and the world title of Raikkonen is also linked to the Tuscan circuit. It would be good not only for Mugello but for the whole of Italy to have two Grands Prix," he added.
