It was announced last night that basketball legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter accident, together with his 13-year-old daughter. He was a hero to many and it is clear to see that he was an inspirational figure for many in Formula 1.

The tragic news broke last night that Kobe Bryant, aged just 41, had died in a helicopter accident, as did his daughter Gianna Maria and seven other victims. The helicopter was on its way to the academy where Bryant trains his daughter and her basketball team.

The former basketball player is seen as one of the best basketball players of all time and had champion success with the Los Angeles Lakers five times in his career.

Lewis Hamilton soon expressed his condolences through his social media channels. “I am sad to hear that we have lost one of the greatest of the earth. Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest athletes and an inspiration for many, including myself. I sympathize with his family and everyone in the world who looked up to him. May he and his daughter rest in peace."

Sergio Perez and Lando Norris also reacted quickly to the shocking news, as did former drivers such as Jenson Button. "Rest in peace ... A great legend!" Perez shards via his Twitter channel.

The McLaren and Alfa Romeo teams are also getting the news. “A sporting icon and a legend. Our sincere condolences to Kobe's family and friends," said McLaren via Twitter.
