Sebastian Vettel was clearly disappointed by his Q3 result, setting only the seventh fastest time and will start down on the fourth row, behind both McLarens and Max Verstappen's Red Bull.

Two weeks ago in Canada, Vettel took a superb pole position, but this was a day to forget for the German, who made a mistake on his first run and lacked any sort of pace on his second lap, eventually qualifying four positions behind his teammate, Charles Leclerc.

Mercedes took yet another dominant one-two, with Lewis Hamilton beating Valtteri Bottas to pole as Ferrari struggled yet again on the track.

Vettel told Sky Sports F1 that he lost grip on the final few runs and that Mercedes are simply too good for the Scuderia right now.

He said: "I don't know what happened, I lost so much momentum there was no point to finish that lap.

"It was up and down some laps it felt good and others didn't. I didn't get the best out of the car but it was difficult for me, but some laps I didn't have he grip I had before. Shame it happened in Q3.

"Mercedes are far away but we should be in the mix with Red Bull."
