Lewis Hamilton blasted Pirelli during Thursday's press conference and said: "we need better tyres". It might have stemmed from his troubles in Monaco, but Toto Wolff has defended the tyre manufacturer.
The Mercedes boss believes Pirelli have an impossible task in keeping everybody happy. Quite often, teams drive a little slow because it's faster than having an additional pit stop. Wolff understands the difficult situation Pirelli is in.
“Pirelli does what is required of them by the Formula 1 organization. They are in fact looking for a tire that breaks down quickly, giving you multiple pit stops and different strategies. However, the engineers have discovered that you can save that pit stop by driving ten seconds slower throughout a race," Wolff told Motorsport-Total.
"The drivers would like a tyre that they can use to the fullest throughout the race, but you don't get exciting races from that. Then by default, you only have one stop and I think that people will quickly find it boring."
