Ferrari aim to get the maximum out of current package as upgrade will "take weeks"

Ferrari is in desperate need for some major improves if they're going to challenge Mercedes during the 2019 Formula season. But any upgrade to the aerodynamic package could "take weeks" according to team principal Mattia Binotto.

Sebastian Vettel produced Ferrari's best result of the season so far as he broke Mercedes 1-2 streak in Monaco. Still, without a race win, frustrations are starting to grow.

Despite the upgrade still some weeks away, Binotto believes they can improve performances and become competitive with just a few tweaks. He suggests it's all about understanding their current model before the upgrades arrive.

"Paul Ricard is very similar to Barcelona. It is not a track where I think we will be very strong. But there is still time from now to there to improve," Binotto told RaceFans.

"Improving the full car and the concept may take some time, no doubt. To define a new aero concept may take a few weeks. But in the meantime what we need is to optimise the package we've got and I think there is still room to do so.

"If you look at the five races at the start of the season there are somewhere we have been strong as well. I think there are races where we can still be strong with the current package, developing it. So we will fight day-by-day, race-by-race and let’s see."

Lewis Hamilton has been very strong at the Canadian Grand Prix throughout his career, winning on six occasions. But Ferrari will take confidence from Vettel's top step 12 months ago.
