The FIA has said that they did not want to be 'dictators' last season when Mercedes revealed their wheel rim holes. Last year Mercedes was at the centre of controversy when their wheel rims had holes in them to help regulate airflow to help control tyre temperature.

The FIA had said that Mercedes design was 'fully legal' despite rival teams questioning whether regulations had been breached.

Speaking about the controversy, the FIA's Nikolas Tombazis, who is head of single-seater technical matters, believed that it would have been wrong for the FIA to ban something that is within the rules.

Tombazis said to Motorsport.com: "The Mercedes solution was legal and the idea was taken up by others.

"But if you want my opinion, I tell you that these complicated designs are not a good thing for F1, because they cost a lot.

"When they appeared in October we could not change things without a dictatorial act, because we found that they respected the rules.

"So it does not surprise me that other teams are coming to take advantage of the same concept."
