Formula 1 continues to expand its calendar with exotic locations being added such as the Vietnam Grand Prix which will join the party in 2020.

But with more of the current circuits reaching the end of their current deals with the sport, could we see another race being introduced in its place?

Plans for a race in Greece have been rumoured for several years behind-the-scenes and although the country may not be in a financial position to host a race, that hasn’t stopped plans being drawn up.

A purpose-built circuit in Athens was touted as a possible venue for the race which, similarly to the Russian and Canadian Grands Prix, would utilise grounds built for the Olympic Games which Athens hosted back in 2004.

But while groundwork had been completed for the 80 million euro project, even with government support, the plans fell apart and nothing substantial materialised.

While nothing is planned currently, Greek media outlet Neoskosmos has speculated that a revival of the plans could occur as the country recovers from its financial woes.
