They might have only competed for a few years but Michael Schumacher was a better driver than Ayrton Senna, this is the opinion of Schumacher's former teammate Eddie Irvine.

Irvine raced alongside Schumacher at Ferrari between 1996 and 1999 but only managed to better the German when Schumacher broke his leg in 1999.

Senna meanwhile competed against Schumacher from 1991 until his tragic accident in 1994.

Despite only competing against each other for a handful of years, Irvine is convinced Schumacher would’ve come out on top.

"I think Michael was probably the best ever,” Irvine told the BBC.

“I think Senna's technique was flawed.

“He was this amazingly talented driver and had an amazing touch, but he had a couple of techniques that weren't correct and he didn't look into everything.”

Irvine recalled his battles against the pair and the Japanese Grand Prix stood out as one that proved Schumacher’s status.

"I remember at the Japanese Grand Prix, Michael was fastest and I was second fastest, in my first grand prix into the pit lane.

“Senna was only fourth or fifth.

"Michael practised the pit entry and Senna didn't, so there are things that he missed.

“I'm a huge fan of him but I think Michael would have, well Michael did beat him when they were racing.” Added the Northern Irishman.
