Pirelli Tyres will use numbers to differentiate between their tyres next season instead of the current names.

Next season, the three types of tyre compound selected for each race will be referred to as 'hard' (white), 'medium' (yellow) and 'soft' (red).

Teams will still need to select their compounds for each race weekend, with Pirelli throwing away terms such as 'Hypersoft' and instead replacing the compound's name with a number.

"We call them one, two, three, four, five," Pirelli director Mario Isola explained to RaceFans. "One is the hardest and five is the softest. If we have six then six will be the softest.

"We'll inform the teams (using) 'compound one, compound two, compound three...' and we'll tell them not hard, medium, soft that will be white, yellow, red, but we'll give them numbers."

The 'Super-Hard' and 'Hard' tyre compounds have barely been used in 2018; with the latter only being selected for Silverstone, but not in the actual race. The former hasn't been selected all season.
