Villeneuve: Hamilton is "miles above" Schumacher

28-10-2018 15:46

Today, Lewis Hamilton has the opportunity to win his fifth World Championship. A haul which will place him just two titles behind Michael Schumacher. The 1997 Champion Jacques Villeneuve believes Hamilton is a much better driver than Schumacher.

It's probably not a popular opinion, but Villeneuve is certain Hamilton's "clean" and "very impressive" career makes the Brit the greater champion.

He asked by Sky Sports to explain his opinion.

"Because he's had his career always clean. He's never resorted to any questionable action to win, and he's always on top of his game. It's been very impressive," Villeneuve.

Be warned. His opinion could be a matter of sour grapes. Schumacher rammed into the Canadian in the title defining race in 1997. Luckily and rightly for Villeneuve Schumacher was disqualified.

Just two drivers in the history of the sport have won five or more titles. But Hamilton's success maybe isn't celebrated as broadly as the likes of Schumacher.

"It's hard to judge from the outside what they really do, we see now with social media, you don't know what is real or what is fake," Villeneuve explained.

"It's really hard and that normally has a positive effect for some fans and a negative one for others."
