Charlie Whiting has demonstrated his support of the stewards following Fernando Alonso's backlash. The Spaniard got a time penalty for cutting part of the chicane during the Japanese Grand Prix, but he claims he was pushed off by Williams driver Lance Stroll. After the race, Alonso told the media that his penalty "shows how bad F1 is."
Whiting explained the steward's decision to give the penalty and how he supports it.

"It was obvious to the stewards that Fernando cut off the chicane. Yes, he was pushed off the track by Lance Stroll, but Alonso used that action to cut off the bend and thus save a lot of time," Whiting explained.
"Had he just returned the position after cutting off the bend, I do not think he had received a time penalty. That would at least have been the most obvious solution."
