How would an F1 Sprint World Championship look?
The F1 Sprint has become a fixture on the F1 calendar since 2021, and in 2023 we'll use a new format which includes the Sprint Shootout. Drivers are awarded points from P1 through to P8 but what would be the standings if we had a Sprint Championship?
In order to make it fair, we have applied the current point system for every sprint race result. P1 is awarded eight points through to P8 being awarded one point.
No surprise
It will come as no surprise to see Max Verstappen on top of the pile. He has won three sprint races, come second twice and finished fourth at the Brazilian Grand Prix last season. That gives him a total of 43 points, 16 points more than Charles Leclerc in second, and 24 more than his teammate Sergio Perez who is down in P6. Carlos Sainz makes the podium on 26 points.
Some joy for Bottas
Valtteri Bottas may now drive for Alfa Romeo, and likely won't be involved for the race victory this weekend, however, during his time at Mercedes he won two of the three 2021 F1 Sprints, at Monza and Interlagos. This along with P3 at Silverstone, and just two points in 2022, helps him to P4, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in fifth.
No longer on the grid
There are three drivers who make the points despite not racing in F1 currently. Daniel Ricciardo actually scored 12 points in sprint races which is enough for ninth in the standings, whilst Antonio Giovinazzi and Sebastian Vettel both have a point each. Who will join the points scorers at this weekend's race in Baku?
