Zak Brown: "Matrix management" the root of all problems at McLaren

Zak Brown has vowed to remove the "matrix management" which has plagued McLaren over the past season. He suggests it is this management method which has caused the team to be paralysed and prevents high-quality employees from reaching their full potential.

The matrix management was introduced by Martin Whitmarsh just after the turn of the Millennium when Adrian Newey left. Brown, the current CEO suggests this is what has hampered McLaren.

"The current structure does not allow certain people to make decisions quickly enough and act as entrepreneurially as I would like," Brown told Germany's formel1.de.

"While it is sometimes appropriate to make decisions in the group, there are also decisions that need to be made by individuals."

The team struggled with engine issues under Honda. Since moving to Renault, the problems have been down to their own doing. And Brown believes this is because of the matrix management structure.

"We react too slowly, we could communicate better, we could simplify things, it has to change. I think our biggest problem is in structure and organisation."

Whether he's right or wrong, the current management system is ending very quickly. Brown went on to confirm he is ready to make the changes.

"I'll do something different with the leadership floor."
