Domenicali: 'We don't need new teams'

Andretti would like to join the Formula 1 grid. But according to Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali, adding new teams is 'not a priority'.

Audi will enter Formula 1 in 2026, when it (probably) takes over Sauber. Porsche also wanted to make its entrance, but a deal with Red Bull Racing fell through. So for now, the number of teams in Formula 1 remains at 10. If it is up to Domenicali, it will stay there too, reports Sky Sports. According to the Italian, although there are too few seats to keep the likes of Daniel Ricciardo in F1, for example. But any more teams would make it "too crowded".

Balance

There are currently 10 teams and 20 seats in F1, which is less than most years in the sport's history. At the same time, Formula 1 is hugely popular and many want to take advantage of that. Like new teams. "As always, you need to be balanced," Domenicali said. "You need to see all the things that are around the table. Having more drivers... at the end of the day there is always a limit at which you can go." 

Adding one or two teams, it won't be that much busier, will it? "I think in that respect there is the evaluation of the sustainability of the team, the evaluation of not being too crowded with that. So I would say in terms of priority, it is not really a need for Formula 1 today."
