After having shocked the racing world by announcing the Andretti family's intention to enter an F1 team in 2024 on Twitter, Mario Andretti has not disclosed much news since, and neither has the team been officially accepted by the FIA as of yet. While commentating on FP2 on Sky Sports, the racing legend opened up more on his family's planned entry.

A famous name returning to F1?

The Andrettis field teams in multiple high-level series of Motorsport including IndyCar, Formula E, and V8 Supercars, all race-winning teams in their respective championship, so when Mario Andretti announced on Twitter that his son Michael was looking to enter a Formula One team in 2024, it was met with a positive outpour and excitement. This came after the attempted takeover of the Alfa Romeo F1 team in late 2021 that fell apart at the last minute, much to the Andretti's dismay.

However, since then not much further news of the Andretti F1 team has come into light, with the FIA not yet accepting its entry. Yet the Andretti group are doing everything in their power to enter F1 in 2024, Andretti stated.

"There is a process we're respecting. We are [trying to be] checking all the boxes. The objective is to be on the grid in 2024. We have a big huge team that can make this happen. Time is of essence, but all the ingredients are in place so we need to say do it," The racing legend spoke while commentating over FP2.

"Teams have some say about it for sure, but again there is going to be a huge investment that should be welcome in any company for the long term. It's all we know, all we love. We don't have any outside interests. This is the pinnacle of the sport, the olympics of the sport and Michael wants to be part of that and I'm proud of that."
