An eighth constructors' title will never be able to hide the fact that Mercedes are incredibly disappointed in missing out on the drivers' title. Last week, Toto Wolff spoke to the international media and one thing is clear: the pain is there. The pain remains, and will do for the foreseeable future.

Stopwatch

During the online conversation, Wolff spoke of his love for Formula 1. "With every bone in my body," the Austrian said. "That's because the stopwatch never lies. But if we break with the fundamental principles of our sport, if the stopwatch doesn't become relevant anymore. Because we are exposed to random decisions. Clearly you may fall out of it [love]."

With a great sense of drama, Wolff then went into how heavy the pain is. "If all the work you put in, all the blood, sweat and tears. And then it [the title] can just be taken away. Randomly. It's going to take a long time to digest what happened on Sunday. I don't think we [Mercedes] will ever come over this. It's not possible. We have to go through everything with the FIA and Formula 1. Together we have to improve the sport for the future."

Official champion

Despite the discontent, Mercedes decided not to appeal further to the FIA. As a result Max Verstappen was officially be crowned world champion last Thursday in Paris. Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff were absent at the annual gala.
