David Almansa has won the opening race of the day at the Japanese Grand Prix ahead of championship leader Maximo Quiles, and claimed all 25 points.
During the opening laps at the Motegi circuit, the leading group began to form with the usual riders also involved. Brian Uriarte, Alvaro Carpe, Almansa, David Muñoz, Quiles, Rico Salmela, Ryusei Yamanaka and Matteo Bertelle were all able to pull away from the rest of the pack.
For Uriarte, things turned bad on Lap 8, when he received a double long-lap penalty because KTM Ajo had worked on his bike after the three-minute board was shown. Still, the Spaniard managed to finish fourth today.
After the KTM rider served his penalties, the leading pack got smaller, with Almansa, Carpe, and Quiles then forming the front group.
Quiles put Almansa under pressure during the final laps, but the Intact GP rider managed to hold on to the victory. With this result, Quiles is yet to mathematically secure the Moto3 title, but he will have a better chance to do so in Indonesia next week.
