Nyck de Vries went wrong at the Canadian Grand Prix in a duel with Kevin Magnussen. The Dutchman braked and as a result fell tremendously far back at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. But even without that mistake, points were out of reach. De Vries argues that the AT04 was not competitive enough to
"I thought it was a fine race up to that point [the incident with Magnussen], just we just weren't competitive enough this weekend," De Vries told Viaplay after the race. "In all conditions I think we were slightly short. Just 'track' position was crucial with such a DRS train. If you're in front then you can come along, but if you're way behind, it's hard to get to the front.''
Whether AlphaTauri considered using a completely different strategy and, for example, driving a very long stint on hard tyre? "Yes, of course Yuki did that. Who did that on lap 1, placing an undercut on a number of cars, including myself. At the first safety car he was four places ahead of me, despite being behind me on lap 1."
