Mercedes and Red Bull have locked in a massive advantage over F1 rivals ahead of the 2026 season and more in GPblog's daily F1 round-up: F1 Today.
Mercedes and Red Bull could gain a significant performance advantage under the 2026 Formula 1 regulations through a cylinder compression method that has been approved by the FIA.
Reports suggest the solution could be worth up to 0.4 seconds per lap, potentially leaving rival manufacturers at a disadvantage. The power unit using the method has already been homologated, with the FIA confirming it complies with the technical regulations as currently written.
Ferrari, Honda and Audi are reported to be unhappy with the approach, which was first identified by Mercedes and later adopted by Red Bull Powertrains. Red Bull is said to have begun implementing the same solution following the arrival of a former Mercedes employee.
While the FIA has previously stated it may consider changes to regulations or measurement methods, any such adjustments would likely apply from 2027. For the 2026 season, the compression solution remains legal.
Max Verstappen has revealed that he was unable to pay for the end-of-season drivers’ dinner in Abu Dhabi, despite it being his turn.
Speaking on the Talking Bull podcast, the four-time world champion explained that the drivers had joked about it being his responsibility to cover the bill. However, Verstappen said he was seated away from the entrance to the private room and did not realize the dinner had already been paid for until later in the evening.
He said that fellow driver Pierre Gasly had settled the bill before he had the chance to do so. Verstappen added that he would need to make his intentions clear before the dinner next time. He also said he is usually generous in such situations and confirmed there would likely be another dinner next year. He reiterated his preference for one experienced driver paying, rather than drawing cards.
