Lewis Hamilton takes his first win since the dramatic finale of the 2021 season and he does it right in front of his home crowd at Silverstone. Here's a quick review of what went down at the 2024 British Grand Prix. Starting alongside his teammate in an all-Mercedes front row,
Lewis Hamilton wasn’t able to launch an immediate attack on George Russell for the lead at the start, as the first stint saw the positions between the two Mercedes remain unchanged.
However, on lap 18, with the Silverstone circuit turning damp due to rain that had started falling a few laps earlier, the seven-time world champion made his move at Stowe, seizing the lead of the British Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri overtook Max Verstappen for third and fourth place, slotting in just behind Hamilton and Russell and quickly closing the gap.
In semi-wet conditions, McLaren appeared to be in a league of their own, with both papaya drivers overtaking the two Mercedes cars and extending the gap until lap 27, when everyone began to pit for intermediate tyres.

The winning move for Hamilton
The first major twist came on lap 34, as George Russell was forced to retire due to technical issues on his W15. As the track gradually dried, Mercedes played a decisive wild card with Hamilton, pitting him a lap earlier than Norris on lap 39 to switch to fresh soft tyres.
The move proves to be a winning one, with Hamilton reclaiming the lead of the race, while a charging Verstappen—on hard tyres—climbs back through the field and overtakes Norris for second place. The Dutchman rapidly closes in on Lewis, but there simply aren’t enough laps left.
Hamilton holds on to clinch his first win of the season—his first since the closing stages of the 2021 championship—celebrating the emotional triumph in front of his home crowd.
