Russell leads the opening lap as Verstappen overtakes Hamilton

George Russell held onto the lead at the start, while Oscar Piastri gained one position on Charles Leclerc to move up to second. Here is everything that happened in the early stages of the Azerbaijan GP.
Not an ideal start for Kimi Antonelli, who was left at the back of the field during the formation lap, dropping one position from his starting spot and finding himself down in 17th.
Otherwise, it was a clean start, with Max Verstappen gaining two positions, including passing Lewis Hamilton down the straight, to move up to sixth. Leclerc is now third, followed by Hadjar in fourth, Norris in fifth and Hamilton in seventh.
