At this moment, it would be impossible to hold the Bahrain Grand Prix. Due to the war, the Dutch and British governments have updated their travel advice for the Middle Eastern country to “do not travel.” Following attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran, the latter is attempting to draw neighboring states into the conflict. For two days now, primarily American military targets in Middle Eastern countries, including Bahrain, have been struck.
Negative travel advisory for Bahrain
As a result, governments in countries including the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have now stated that people should not travel to Bahrain. The Dutch government writes: “Whatever your situation: do not travel there. It is too dangerous. The Dutch embassy cannot assist you if you get into trouble.”
Of course, the question is how long this negative travel advisory will remain in effect. The Bahrain Grand Prix is scheduled for April 12 and can only proceed once governments lift the “do not travel” advisory.
If the advisory does remain in force, people traveling to Bahrain are generally not insured.
Formula 1 could never afford that, and from a safety standpoint, it is already inconceivable to stage a Grand Prix if it cannot be done without serious concerns.
The coming weeks are crucial for Formula 1
At the moment, Mercedes and McLaren, together with a delegation from Pirelli, are in Bahrain. They were set to take part in a tire test.
These F1 personnel are currently stuck, as GPblog reported this Sunday after speaking with those involved. Nyck de Vries is among those stranded. The Dutchman has spoken out via social media.
