Kimi Antonelli has topped the timing charts in the final practice session at the Monaco GP. The Italian's lap time of 1:12.720 was enough to edge out
Ferrari duo
Charles Leclerc and
Lewis Hamilton in the last preparations before the most important Qualifying of the season later today.
It only took ten minutes of action before both Cadillacs reported issues with their brakes. In FP2, Sergio Perez's front right brakes caught fire to bring out a red flag, this time he complained about his front lefts, while Bottas reported similar issues.
All straight onto the softs, the times were tumbling all the time throughout the first half hour of FP3, with Ferrari continuing to look strong, but the
Mercedes duo certainly taking the fight to the Scuderia - Antonelli two tenths up on Leclerc at the halfway point.
Just at halfway, Franco Colapinto also suffered a spin at the hotel hairpin, damaging his rear wing and bringing out a very brief yellow flag.
The grid then moved onto softs with 20 minutes or so to go, with Antonelli going six tenths up on Leclerc on a flyer, the Monegasque hit traffic, while Hamilton moved up to P2 but three tenths off the Italian.
A late Red Flag then came out with 15 minutes to go, after Haas' Ollie Bearman struck the wall at Massenet. Thankfully the Briton was okay, but lost his rear wing in the crash, so Haas will have to work hard on pre-Qualifying repairs.
Speaking on Sky
F1 following Antonelli's FP3 performance, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said: "
That was a good session for Kimi, fast. Now we just need to continue to build for qualifying. The Austrian is well aware, however, that Ferrari did not get that perfect lap during the final runs, as Leclerc hit traffic in Sector 3.
"Leclerc’s lap before he made a mistake in Turn 10 was there or thereabout, so it’s still not going to be in the walk in the park but we are very positively surprised," Wolff said.
