Haas eyes Ferrari junior for first Formula 1 outing

Camara is in his first full season in Formula 2. The Brazilian races for Invicta Racing and currently finds himself in second place in the championship. It’s no coincidence, as Camara is a driver from the Ferrari Driver Academy. The Scuderia sees a bright future for the current Formula 3 title holder.

Four times per season—although a majority of the teams would like a temporary adjustment for 2026—F1 teams are required to have a rookie (no more than two Grands Prix raced) take part in a first free practice session. GPblog understands that Haas, closely linked with Ferrari, are considering putting Camara in the car for an FP1 this season. However, no final decision has yet been made.

Haas is looking for a driver for the free practice sessions because the team does not have any junior drivers under contract. One option could be to give Ryo Hirakawa another chance, as they did last year, but the 32-year-old Japanese driver has no prospects of a full-time seat in Formula 1. Aside from pleasing Haas partner Toyota, running the WEC driver again might be seen as of limited value. Nevertheless, it cannot be ruled out that both Hirakawa and Camara will drive in an FP1 for Haas.

Camara could also take part in a free practice session for Ferrari, but it appears that Dino Beganovic is the Italians’ preferred choice. The Swede already has experience participating in FP1. In the F2 championship, Beganovic is currently in eighth place.
