Fernando Alonso surprised the paddock by taking P1 in the first free practice session ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Spaniard's 1.31.116 far better than anything else out on track, with +0.150 separting him and Leclerc in P2, while Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton took P3 and P4, respectively.
The McLaren's of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were fifth and sixth, while Isack Hadjar, Carlos Sainz, Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon rounded out the top ten.

Rain stays clear, but Albon smokes out pit lane

Rain had been falling at the Marina Bay Street Circuit before the first session of the weekend got underway, but as FP1 got underway, the hard tyres were the choice for teams and drivers as the track dried up.
However, for Alex Albon, his first practice was over after just ten minutes, with a rear brake hardware issue causing his Williams car to go up in smoke and rule him out for the rest of the session.
On track, it was Norris who set the early pace on the white-walled hard tyres for the first half of the session, with a lap time of 1.32.493 just +0.021 quicker than Verstappen in P2, while Fernando Alonso on the medium tyres was +0.099 off the McLaren driver.

Leclerc impresses on hard tyres

The soft tyres replaced the hard tyres for the second half of the session, with Leclerc showing Ferrari's pace in Singapore with a 1.31.266, going four-tenths quicker than Norris' opening lap time on the red-walled tyres.
Verstappen then moved up into the top three, but he could only go +0.126 slower than Leclerc, while Hadjar and Sainz rounded out the top five ahead of Hamilton.
Piastri then made his move up into the top three, but he was then replaced by Alonso, finding some unexpected pace behind the wheel of his Aston Martin to take the top spot.
Leclerc and Verstappen jumped back up into the top three before the session concldued, but no one could match the Spaniard.
