The promise Elkann made at Monza four years ago that now defines Vasseur's future at Ferrari

The statement was made with Mattia Binotto still serving as Ferrari team principal, months before Fred Vasseur would join the team. Elkann identified Charles Leclerc as being in "pole position" to claim a world title, last won for Ferrari by Kimi Raikkonen in 2007. At the time, Ferrari was Red Bull's closest challenger, and confidence was running high despite an error-strewn campaign.

Now, half way through the 2026 campaign and it is difficult to see how that prediction can come true. Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari's best-placed driver, sits third on 191, 76 points adrift of the championship lead. Leclerc is fifth on 155. In the constructors' standings, Mercedes leads Ferrari by 122 points.

The championship remains some distance away, and the new regulatory cycle that was supposed to offer Ferrari a reset has instead seen Mercedes clearly emerge as the benchmark team, setting the pace throughout the season.

The defining tension in Vasseur's position is that he inherited Elkann's championship horizon rather than setting it. According to ScuderiaFans, the 2022 pledge was "never a deadline specifically imposed on Fred Vasseur, who would only arrive at Ferrari a few months later." Nevertheless, it now inevitably influences how his tenure is assessed.

No decision has been taken and there is no planned dismissal, though indications suggest the confidence surrounding Vasseur is no longer considered untouchable. His contract, renewed in July 2025, runs until the end of 2027, but when that moment arrives, Elkann is expected to be the executive who makes the final call. However, the championship objective remains far away, and Vasseur is among those whose future will inevitably be examined as Ferrari searches for a way to respond.
