Kimi Antonelli has truly taken the F1 world by storm with his third consecutive victory in Miami, as the young Italian continues to strengthen his grip on the championship lead. Ben Hunt and Jim Kimberley analyse his sensational run of form in the latest episode of GPBlog F1 Paddock Update.
Last year, Wolff took a major gamble by placing an extremely young and inexperienced driver straight into Formula 1 - and not even through a smaller team, but directly into a top outfit like Mercedes. Although Antonelli had hugely impressed throughout the junior categories, the jump to F1 still carried significant risks, even for a talent widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects in motorsport, something the 2025 season ultimately exposed at times.
The Bologna-born driver made his Formula 1 debut shortly after turning 18 alongside a tough benchmark like Russell, with the experience gap proving evident for much of last season. It was only towards the final races of the championship that Antonelli began to show flashes of the talent now being displayed with increasing consistency this year.
After ironing out some costly mistakes and growing increasingly confident in his own abilities, Antonelli has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2026 season, stealing the spotlight with three consecutive pole positions and victories - an achievement only the very greatest drivers in Formula 1 history have managed. Holding a 20-point lead in the standings after just four races, Wolff can now certainly say his bold gamble has paid off in the long run.

Antonelli plays down hype despite Miami hat-trick success

Fresh off his third straight victory in Miami, Antonelli made it clear he is not getting carried away in the title fight despite his growing advantage at the top of the standings. The Italian admitted the season remains extremely long and unpredictable, while expecting Russell to respond strongly in Canada, a circuit where the Briton has traditionally performed very well.
At the same time, the Italian acknowledged that his confidence with the car is continuing to grow race after race, with the Mercedes driver feeling increasingly in control in all conditions. Looking ahead to Montreal, he stressed the importance of continuing to extract the maximum from every session while also expressing optimism over the latest upgrades introduced by the team, praising Mercedes for the work currently being done behind the scenes.
