Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes drivers should be penalized for speaking disrespectfully about the current regulations, referring to Max Verstappen. GPblog's readers think otherwise.
Speaking on the BBC Chequered Flag podcast, the Colombian called for consequences for the drivers disrespecting the series. He explained: "You've got to respect the sport. For me, what the drivers are doing, I'm okay with you not liking the regulations, but the way you were speaking about what you're living off and your own sport, there should be consequences for that."
Verstappen was among the most vocal competitors in this regard. He compared the current form of racing to Mario Kart, and warned that these regulations can have long-lasting consequences for Formula 1. According to the Dutchman, the regulations still feel the same after the tweaks introduced for the Miami GP.
Montoya also presented a clear solution to what he sees to be an issue. "Park him. Add seven points to the licence, eight points to the licence. Whatever you do after, you're going to be parked. I guarantee you all the messaging would be different," he added.
In GPblog's poll, only 23% of the readers agree with the former Williams and McLaren driver. 54% of who voted are against the Colombian's verdict, while another 23% thinks it is irrelevant. One comment also reads: "Montoya is funny. It's as if when he was a driver, he was moderate in his criticisms of F1."
