Former Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner could be set for a Formula 1 return, with fresh reports suggesting he has held talks with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, which is exploring a potential future involvement in the sport.
The British motorsport figure, who attended last weekend’s Monaco Formula E race, was also spotted at the Cannes Film Festival alongside BYD executive vice president Stella Li. According to ESPN, Horner met with Li in Cannes, where the pair discussed what a possible Formula 1 partnership could look like.
While BYD is still some way off committing to an F1 entry, the report adds that both sides believe there is genuine potential to develop a collaboration if discussions progress.

BYD to enter Formula 1 with Horner?

Earlier, GPblog reported that ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, rumours began circulating suggesting that Chinese automotive giant BYD was considering a future entry into Formula 1. While the story initially generated headlines, it was largely dismissed as speculation. However, recent images of Horner meeting BYD vice-president Stella Li have reignited discussion, and this time, it may need to be taken more seriously.
With Formula 1 continuing its aggressive expansion into new global markets, manufacturers increasingly shifting towards electrification, and the FIA remaining open to grid expansion beyond 2026, it would be premature to rule out any potential entrant, even one currently focused exclusively on electric vehicles.

Founded in 1995 in China as a battery manufacturer, BYD has developed into one of the most influential automotive companies in the world, particularly within the electric vehicle sector. The company has rapidly expanded its global presence and now competes directly with established brands such as Tesla, Mercedes, BMW, and Toyota across key international markets.
Formula 1’s upcoming engine regulations, which place a stronger emphasis on electrification and sustainable fuels, also align closely with BYD’s long-term technological direction.

Horner takes on new role following Red Bull exit

While uncertainty remains over his timeline to return to Formula 1, Horner has taken on a new role as an advisor on investments in premium sports for private equity firm Oakley Capital.
Nearly a year on from his departure from Red Bull, which brought an end to a highly successful two-decade spell that saw the team become one of Formula 1’s dominant forces, the Briton has yet to confirm his next move within the sport. However, he has now officially stepped into a role outside of it.
Speaking about his appointment, Horner highlighted that sports businesses are currently benefiting from rapidly growing global audiences and rising participation levels driven by healthier, more active lifestyles. He also noted his long-standing relationship with Peter and the Oakley Capital team, praising their approach to building ambitious, founder-led companies.
