Wolff on new pit stop rule: "Whether this has set something in motion? Maybe."

On Friday the news came out that pit stops will be 0.2 seconds slower from the Hungarian Grand Prix. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says that they had been in contact with the FIA before the news came out.

With the new rules, every action a mechanic makes must take at least 0.15 seconds. If the mechanic is faster than that 0.15 seconds, the mechanic in question must wait until a green light gives the signal. Red Bull Racing in particular look set to suffer from this, as they have had the fastest pitstops all year.

Wolff admits that Mercedes went to the FIA a few weeks back with a question about a safety mechanism. "We asked the FIA about a safety mechanism related to a system we use and if that could then be optimised," he said to Motorsport-Total.com.

Wolff explained that this happened three or four weeks ago, but he doesn't want to admit that this was the reason for the new rule. "Whether this has set something in motion? Maybe. I don't know."
