Wolff fires brutal 'incompetent group' jab following engine debate outcome

The meeting held yesterday in Bahrain between the FIA and the power unit manufacturers to address the now well-known engine compression-ratio debate has resulted in a new proposal being put forward.

Under the suggested change, starting from 1 August 2026, compliance with the compression ratio limit would need to be verified not only under ambient conditions but also at a representative operating temperature of 130°C.

“I think what became clear yesterday in the F1 Commission was, I was really positive,” Wolff said during the day two press conference in Bahrain.

“In the past we would be victim of ourselves taking drastic or draconian decisions in an incompetent group like the F1 Commission. Having said that, there's more engineers now in the group, so you can't blame us being on planet Mars.”

He then added: “It was a it was good to evaluate, to agree on some things, rather than a knee-jerk on some quick decisions like in the past. And let's see how this is all going to evolve.”

“Melbourne is also energy-wise a very difficult track, so we are going to right see from the beginning on where the short, where the problems can be, and then develop from there and find solutions that are in the best interest of all stakeholders.”

During the same press conference, Wolff moved to dismiss fresh speculation surrounding Petronas fuel, rejecting claims that it has yet to be homologated ahead of the new season.

Having already brushed aside the controversy linked to the alleged compression-ratio “trick”, the Mercedes team principal also pushed back against rumours suggesting the fuel supplier was still awaiting approval ahead of the Melbourne opener.
