Toto Wolff has revealed the timeline behind his decision to sign Kimi Antonelli to the Mercedes driver programme, while also delivering a glowing verdict on the role the 19-year-old’s father, Marco Antonelli, has played in his development.
Antonelli currently leads the drivers’ standings, holding a 25-point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell. The young Italian has enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough season with the Silver Arrows, etching his name into Formula 1 history by becoming the youngest driver to achieve several milestones, including securing a pole position, winning a Sprint race, and leading the championship standings.
Amid Antonelli’s rapid rise and the growing attention surrounding his performances, Wolff has revisited the decision to bring the Italian into the Mercedes fold. Speaking in an interview with Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Mercedes team principal explained that Antonelli’s debut campaign in 2025 was always expected to be a period of adaptation before making a significant step forward in his second season.

“We knew he needed a year to settle in and grow because Formula 1 is a completely different world compared to the smaller series. He had to adapt to the car and learn how to manage commitments with sponsors and the media. The goal was always to improve in his second season, and he has done exactly that, driving at a very high level and achieving extraordinary results. Right now, he is exceeding our wildest expectations, but he shouldn’t become complacent.”

“Everyone is praising him, but I always ask him to maintain balance. We cannot compare him to Ayrton Senna, who won three titles and is one of the most iconic drivers of all time. Kimi has won five races, so let’s allow him to grow.”
Asked when he first decided Antonelli had the potential to become a Mercedes driver, the 54-year-old revealed that the team began monitoring the Italian from a young age, before officially bringing him into the Mercedes Junior Team in 2019.
“At nine or ten years old, he had already achieved success and won championships in karting. We started monitoring him at that time, and then in 2019, he joined the Mercedes Junior Team. His success, however, is also thanks to his family. His father is a former driver and the owner of the AKM and Antonelli Motorsport teams, so he was able to provide him with excellent advice.”

Wolff still considers Hamilton a threat in Antonelli’s title fight

Despite praising Antonelli and acknowledging the possibility of the teenager challenging for the drivers’ championship this season, Wolff has refused to rule out Lewis Hamilton’s chances of joining the title battle. The Mercedes boss insisted he has never doubted Hamilton’s ability and believes the seven-time world champion remains capable of competing for victories and championships if he has the right machinery beneath him.

“I’ve never had any doubts about him. We know he is a great champion. He just needed the right car, and Ferrari gave it to him. Now he can fight to win races and even the championship.”
Hamilton currently sits 32 points behind Antonelli in the drivers’ standings, with the Belgian Grand Prix next on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
