Wolff describes his 'ejection seat' position after four switches in 2025

Mercedes CEO and team principal Toto Wolff explained that his position in Formula 1 is an "ejection seat".
"You gotta be great. If you go from great to good because you’re not motivated enough, or you haven’t been keeping up with the development of technology—then this is an ejection seat."
- Toto Wolff
Wolff first took on the role of team principal in the 2013 season, and won seven drivers' title (six with Lewis Hamilton and one with Nico Rosberg), and eight constructors' titles with Mercedes.
Speaking about his position to Forbes, the Austrian said: "This notion of one leader is something that I really struggle with. I couldn’t be the best CFO, the best CMO, the best CEO, all in one. I see myself among that team. If there’s a final decision to make, then I will do that. But I rely on the collective."
Wolff added that he aims to take care of his team. "I see it a little bit as my tribe, I ought to protect them. But I also need to give clarity of the mission."

Over the years, four team bosses were replaced in Formula 1. Right now, Wolff remains to be the longest-standing person in the position.
Moreover, other than him, no team principal was appointed before December 2022. The latest to take on this role is Adrian Newey at Aston Martin.
Wolff said: "You gotta be great. If you go from great to good because you’re not motivated enough, or you haven’t been keeping up with the development of technology—then this is an ejection seat.”
