Why Norris thinks Monaco's new Sprint format could go wrong fast for drivers

Earlier this week, Formula 1 announced its 2027 schedule. The new calendar will include 10 Sprint races compared to the previous six. What caught many fans' attention was that Monaco would host a Sprint as well, after GPblog first reported on it.

That means that, with only a single free practice session in the Principality, drivers will have to push their cars to the limit already on Friday afternoon in Sprint Qualifying. The Sprint and regular Qualifying will be held on Saturday, with the weekend concluding on Sunday with the famous Monaco Grand Prix.

This week, Norris was present at the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am golf tournament.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the upcoming Sprint race in Monaco, the defending world champion said: "Interesting. I guess the main thing is that means you've got FP1, [Sprint] qualifying on Friday, which is the challenge.

During those 10 sessions, drivers and teams will have only 60 minutes to set everything up. "That's more relying on data from this year. Obviously tougher for us as drivers," Norris continued.

"It's more exciting for the fans and the people watching," the Briton concluded.

After the conclusion of the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, where he finished in third place, Norris flew to Portimao to test McLaren's hypercar. After that, there was widespread speculation about when Norris would next drive the Hypercar. Some even suggested that the Briton would take part in the next 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 2027, Le Mans will not clash with a Formula 1 weekend, so in theory, Norris could take part. However, GPblog could confirm that Norris will definitely not participate in the next edition of this iconic race.
