Max Verstappen has offered a fresh hint about his future in Formula 1 following the FIA’s recent confirmation of changes to the sport’s 2027 technical regulations. In the aftermath of the Miami Grand Prix,
the FIA announced that proposed adjustments to the 2027 engine rules had been agreed in principle after an online meeting involving team principals, FOM, and power unit manufacturers. The proposals include an increase of around 50kW in internal combustion engine power via higher fuel flow, alongside a reduction of roughly 50kW in ERS deployment, shifting the balance to an estimated 60–40 split in favour of the internal combustion engine.
The changes have been introduced amid growing criticism of the current regulations from within the paddock, with Verstappen among those who have previously voiced concerns. Speaking during the
Canadian Grand Prix media day, and in response to
GPblog and other outlets, the Red Bull driver welcomed the direction of the revisions and suggested they align with what he had hoped to see.
“It's definitely heading into a very positive direction. I think it's the minimum I was hoping for, and I think it's really nice that that's what they want to do. You know, that's definitely what I think also the sport needs,” he stated.

The Dutchman was then pressed on whether the regulatory direction could influence his long-term commitment to Formula 1, with the four-time world champion hinting that it could play a role in his thinking.
“I mean, I just want a good product in Formula 1, and that will for sure improve the product,” he adds.
It is worth noting that Verstappen has previously suggested he is
considering his future in the sport and could make a decision in the coming weeks. While no final call has been made, the Red Bull driver has continued to compete across other series, most recently taking part in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
