"It’s not what you’re here for, but you also have to be realistic, it’s not going the way I want."
- Max VerstappenVerstappen responded cynically to a question about whether he enjoyed qualifying. “Yeah, great,” he said. “I love driving in the rain, but this was just ice. I might as well go rallying. This isn’t how it should be, and there isn’t enough light, it’s just dark on the track.
"But it’s the same for everyone, so we have to deal with it. It wasn’t too wet, but there was zero grip. I was actually surprised not much happened,” the reigning world champion added.

Verstappen had experienced this once before
Verstappen was asked if he had experienced this before in
Formula 1. After thinking for a moment, the 28-year-old had an answer.
“Only in Turkey in 2020, that was great fun too,” he said sarcastically.
In the end,
Verstappen took second on the grid and emphasised being realistic.
“It’s not what you’re here for, but you also have to be realistic; it’s not going the way I want. It hasn’t all season, so I can easily put it into perspective. "The car isn’t great in the rain either, especially not on intermediates; we don’t have that sorted compared to McLaren, so we were on the back foot the whole Q3 session. That final run felt good, but not good enough.
Finally, Verstappen was asked to look ahead to the race in Las Vegas: “I’m here to win and nothing else, so then second is fine. We’re going to give it a try, anyway.”
