If Max Verstappen and his fellow drivers race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday, it might very well be the last time they do so as part of the Spanish Grand Prix. Madrid is intended to replace Barcelona as the host of the Spanish Grand Prix by 2026, which makes the current location uncertain for a longer stay on the F1 calendar.
Max Verstappen would find it particularly regrettable if Barcelona were definitively removed from the calendar. “I enjoy driving here; it's a very good circuit, very enjoyable. Of course, racing can sometimes be a bit more challenging,” says the Dutchman, alluding to the fact that overtaking is not always easy at this track.
Speaking to GPblog and other media, Verstappen continues: “I think it would be quite a loss for Formula 1 in general if this circuit were to disappear. Especially for the drivers, but I think even the fan experience here is pleasant. You can visit [the city of] Barcelona.”

Verstappen does not comment on Madrid

The Spanish Grand Prix is set to be held on a new street circuit in Madrid by 2026. About this, Verstappen says: “I of course understand that they might want to build something in Madrid and create a bit of hype, but that's not up to me."
Moreover, F1 will still visit the Barcelona circuit in 2026. There's still a one-year contract, which means that, in principle, two Grands Prix will take place in Spain. For 2027 and beyond, Barcelona aspires to become part of a rotation system, for example, with the Grand Prix in Imola.
