Discussions between George Russell and Mercedes concern, as GPblog understands, a multi-year deal, which would mean that he could become Max Verstappen's teammate in the future, should the reigning world champion move to Mercedes.
In Formula 1, there has been a lot of talk in recent months about a possible move from the Dutchman to Mercedes, but this seems to be off the table for now. The British tabloid The Daily Mail reported that Mercedes had given up the battle for Verstappen and was in advanced talks with Russell about a contract extension.
This website understands the German team's intention is to sign Russell to a multi-year contract. At the moment, both Russell and Kimi Antonelli are currently under contract until the end of 2025.
Wolff has said he wants a lineup with Antonelli and Russell for the 2026 season 'as it stands'. Nothing has been announced yet about a possible new contract for the Italian talent.

Verstappen could become Russell's teammate

This would mean that Verstappen could become Russell's teammate at Mercedes in 2027, should he move to Mercedes after next year. The chance of Verstappen driving for Mercedes next season is not great, as Helmut Marko, advisor to the Austrian team, confirmed the day after the Belgian Grand Prix that Verstappen will stay with Red Bull in 2026. However, nothing has been confirmed from the Verstappen camp about this.
