Max Verstappen has disregarded comments that were made by Sergio Perez as "not how he meant it", saying their relationship is still "great". The Mexican, while on a podcast this week, spoke about his time at the Austrian team, stating that he knows
Red Bull "regrets" moving on from him after the 2024 season.
Along with that, he also spoke about the friction that came between the two of them at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix when Verstappen did not let Perez by at the end of the race, with the 35-year-old saying the Dutchman holds things in until he is out on track.
Verstappen was asked if these comments were something that disappointed him after being his teammate for four seasons, seeing them win two constructors' titles together in the process, but that was quickly refuted by the Dutchman.
"No, but I think also how you now worded this is not how he meant it. I have a great relationship with Checo. I think we've always been great teammates. I have a lot of respect for him. He has a lot of respect for me, and that's it from my side."
After a challenging 2024, despite being handed a contract extension in the same season, Sergio Perez was let go by Red Bull at the end of the season.
Verstappen to gift something to Perez
Verstappen continued by saying he is looking forward to seeing his former teammate back in the paddock once again, hoping to give him a special gift when he next sees Perez.
"I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing him again soon in the paddock, and I still need to give him a helmet of mine.
"I promised him that because he gave me one of his with a very nice message on it, and I promised him. Hopefully, around Mexico, I can give him mine.
"So yeah, for me, whatever is written in the media, I know how Checo is, and we have a great relationship," concluded Verstappen.
