Stoffel Vandoorne has explained that him and his teammate Fernando Alonso aren't as far apart as the statistics suggest, and the Belgian even said that the two are "very very close".
Vandoorne is the only driver who has yet to out-qualify his teammate, and the gap in the championship standings is quite significant as well. Still, Vandoorne explained during the drivers' press conference that this doesn't tell the whole story.
"The statistics maybe tell that but in reality we're actually very closely matched," he explained to the present media.
"In terms of where I was last year, I feel in a much better position this year.
"I'm not worried if Fernando is quicker than me sometimes, that's normal."

Looking ahead, the Belgian expects his team to be making steps as the season progresses.
"We're on the right track, the team is very busy to improve the car.
"Unfortunately we haven't had the start we hoped for, but I'm sure we'll be making a step forwards every race."
