If they there was an award for it on Saturday,
Pierre Gasly would win driver of the day hands down.
Both Pierre Gasly and Brendan Hartley out-qualified both
McLaren's in Bahrain after a very disappointing performance. Gasly impressed in particular with a heroic effort to put his car sixth in qualifying which will become fifth tomorrow with Lewis Hamilton's gearbox penalty.
"It's been an amazing day. The team have worked really hard. I'm really happy to thank all the guys this way. Hopefully, we'll be aiming for some points."
Fernando Alonso had already only just scraped through into Q2 after setting an identical lap time to Romain Grosjean however because he set the time first, the Spaniard progressed over the Frenchman. His pace didn't improve however and it was another poor display from the papaya orange machines.
Stoffel Vandoorne will line up 14th and Alonso only one better in 13th place, Hartley put the Force India of Sergio Perez in between and will start 11th. But for a mistake into the final corner, the Kiwi might have even made the final qualifying session alongside his teammate.
