Last weekend the 2021 Formula E season came to an end. And how! After a bizarre last race, Nyck de Vries won the exciting world championship and became the first driver ever to do so.
Jean Todt says to The Race that he is happy with the status of the 'World Championship'. The championship once started small but has now grown considerably.
"I always said it's the FIA's baby, but I had to stop this quickly. You start as an FIA championship and then the next step is to become part of the elite of FIA events and become a world championship. Over the years, I believe Formula E has acquired all the credentials to become an FIA World Championship, which it did in 2021."

Vacancy looming in Formula E

After all, Audi and BMW have already left, while Mercedes is threatening to leave soon as well. That, despite the recent growth of the championship, would be a big blow. How the sport will cope with this is still unclear.

However, a new era is about to begin thanks to the Gen3 cars that will be driven from next year onwards.
