Max Verstappen initially took the lead from Kimi Antonelli off the line, but the Mercedes driver fought back to reclaim the position, also allowing Charles Leclerc to get past. George Russell was forced to retire following contact at Les Combes.
The British driver made contact with Lewis Hamilton, coming off worse in the collision and being forced to retire, prompting the deployment of the safety car to neutralise the race.
The seven-time world champion clipped the rear of his compatriot's W17 with his front-left wheel, sending him into a spin before he came to a stop in the gravel.
