The Monaco Grand Prix was one to forget for the Mercedes team. George Russell also tried an ambitious 'maneouvre' on Alexander Albon in the Nouvelle Chicane, but received a drive through penalty by the stewards. The Briton reviewed the incident ahead of the Spanish GP. After being stuck behind the
Williams drivers and being just outside of the points, for a change, Russell decided to cut Turns 10 and 11 completely to get past Alex Albon.
The Briton said over the team radio he will 'take the penalty', but received a drive through one by the stewards.
"I was just getting tired of staring at the back of a Williams rear wing for 50 laps, to be honest. It was a bit ironic because I finished higher up the order by doing that move than I would have done if I just stuck behind Alex. I pulled a whole pit stop in the space of three laps and then I was free to do my own race," he began.
Dinner not enough for Russell
"And I at least enjoyed the last 25 laps of the race, so it's not part of the new George Russell being a rebel cutting the track, it was just getting tired of seeing Alex driving like a grandma," Russell continued about the incident.
After joking about the penalty Russell receive,
Albon did take out the Mercedes driver to dinner.
Still, they are not on equal footing just yet, the Briton added. "Not expensive enough, so bill is definitely even just yet."
