Piastri won't copy Ricciardo's Shoey: 'Create my own legacy'

After winning his first Formula 1 Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri vows to create his own legacy and not copy his fellow Austrian driver Daniel Ricciardo's celebratory 'Shoey'. But the Aussie doesn't rule out enjoying a 'Shoey' on the plane home from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

It looked in doubt at some stages, but Piastri came through to take a maiden victory in Formula 1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. After taking the lead from teammate Lando Norris on the first lap, Piastri drove a near-perfect race. However, after Norris undercut the Australian, he took the lead and started to increase the gap between the two of them, despite team orders coming from McLaren. However, with three laps left, Norris let Piastri through to take victory at the Hungaroring.

As a result, Piastri becomes the fifth different Australian to win a race in Formula 1. He follows in the footsteps of Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo. The latter created a famous podium celebration where he would pour champagne into his shoe and drink it. It soon became known as a 'Shoey'.

"The shoey is Danny Ric’s thing. I'm going to get roped into it because I'm an Aussie, but I don't know. I'll try and think of something new. No, I think that's gone and done. I know we did one at Silverstone last week, but I think we were a bit upset after the race there, so we needed some cheering up. Maybe we'll do one in the plane on the way back. We can probably pay the cleaning fee now. But no, I'll leave that to Danny Ric, and that can be his legacy. I'll create my own," Piastri said after the race.

More race wins might be just around the corner. McLaren are now consistently at the front of the grid, and a one-two finish only demonstrated that further in Hungary. Going into the final race before the summer break, McLaren sit second in the Constructors World Championship and now have Red Bull Racing in their sights.
