McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has admitted his surprise at outpacing both Ferrari drivers during the Austrian Grand Prix. Ferrari have held the advantage over McLaren since the Canadian Grand Prix and were in high spirits after taking their first win of the season in Barcelona. Despite almost locking out the front row on Saturday, Ferrari dropped to fifth with Lewis Hamilton and eighth with Charles Leclerc, both finishing behind Piastri who crossed the line in fourth.
Speaking to GPblog among other media outlets after the race, the Australian said: "I think to be honest it was a bit of a surprise we were able to beat Ferrari. Obviously in my case it wasn't by much. Strategy probably helped us out today but the pace was a little bit stronger than them but clearly not strong enough to Mercedes and Verstappen, who was a lot quicker than we expected."
Piastri's fourth place finish was a promising result for the Australian who finished 58 seconds off the race winner in Barcelona and 35 behind his teammate Norris. In Austria, it was Piastri who had the advantage over Norris, who finished 10 seconds behind in seventh.
"We put a lot of effort into understanding why Barcelona was so tricky. I think we understood why and attacked things pretty differently for this weekend. I think the result is kind of the evidence of that work. So from that side of things I'm really happy, just when you don't get a trophy at the end, you always wish there's a bit more."
McLaren ditches papaya with striking livery in Silverstone
McLaren has revealed a one-off livery for this weekend's British Grand Prix, dropping its traditional papaya orange with a surprising historically inspired colour theme.
The reigning champions have gone for a white design at Silverstone this week which pays tribute to the McLaren M2B, the team's first Formula One car from 1966, where the team scored their first point at the British Grand Prix. It comes after the team marked their 1,000 Grand Prix milestone earlier this season in Monaco, where McLaren legend Mika Hakkinen drove the M2B.
