McLaren CEO Zak Brown was awkwardly put on the spot by being asked whether he would boot Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri to make way for Max Verstappen, and was told he must answer the question. Fresh talks have emerged over
a potential shock move for the Red Bull driver, with Sky Sports News reporting that Verstappen's camp have held talks with the reigning constructors champions. Verstappen remains contracted to Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season, but reports continue to suggest that performance-related clauses in his contract could allow him to leave earlier under certain circumstances.
Ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix, Brown appeared as a guest on
Capital Radio, where he was given a series of questions where he had to choose either Norris or Piastri. The most awkward of which was out of Norris or Piastri, who he would boot to make way for Verstappen.
Brown responded "that's a big question" to which he was told he must give an answer by the presenters. "I've got to answer that's a tough one" he added. The McLaren CEO though refused to budge telling the hosts: "I think everyone can take a hike, I'm out of here."
The McLaren CEO then proceeded to take his headphones off and walked out of the studio as the hosts jokingly sang the lyrics: "Walk out the door, just turn around now because you're not welcome anymore," from the Tina Turner song "I Will Survive".
During the interview the McLaren CEO said that he would trust Piastri the most to take over McLaren for one day as CEO and that he would least want to be stuck in a lift with Norris. In response to the latter question he joked "I've known Lando for like 10 years now so we're really tired of each other."
Brown does not rule out Verstappen move
Brown had previously been asked about the possibility of signing Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend. While expressing satisfaction with his current line-up, he did not completely rule out a future move for the Dutchman.
"Well, I’d be very surprised if Lando [Norris] or Oscar [Piastri] went elsewhere because they’re very happy. Of course, we’ve got contracts, but even besides that, contract aside, we’re very happy with them. They’re very happy here,” Brown told Sky Sports. “If, for some strange reason, someone slipped on a banana peel getting out of the tub, then yeah, of course, Max is a four-time world champion,” he added.
