Norris reveals McLaren have 'not got close' to reaching car's full potential

His comments come despite being the class of the field during the Hungarian Grand Prix, taking his first victory of the season in dominant fashion, after overcoming the challenge of his teammate Oscar Piastri, who ultimately retired from the race.

With the 2026 season now in its summer break, Norris has reflected on the campaign so far, insisting the reigning champions are "disappointed" with their performance to date, despite achieving some good results.

In a Q&A with McLaren, the Briton explained: "As a team, and with the car, we're certainly not quite at the level we want to be at, or we were at last season. We have still had some good results, but we also know we're not where we should be. We're not happy with that, we've been disappointed with our own performance, but we're working hard to improve.

Norris added: "We know from the past few years what it is like when you do understand the car and what happens when we can maximise the package. We don't feel like we have gotten close to that potential yet, so we are excited to really try and understand it completely, which is when we'll be able to maximise things."

Norris confidently declared that he performed "on another level" at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and was better "in every sense" than his teammate Piastri.

He said during the post race press conference: "What pleased me the most, just the fact we were so quick, the car was very strong today. I was very happy with a lot of things. The car was still horrible to drive at times but quick and I would prefer a horrible but quick car rather than anything else.
